From champion athlete to architect and, ultimately, the visionary founder of one of today’s most dynamic cultural movements, Davit Tvildiani’s path has been anything but conventional. His creation of the Batumi Pearl festival in Georgia planted the seeds for what would grow into the Pearl Festivals, now an international platform uniting young talents from more than 30 countries.
Early Years: Sports, Architecture, and Media
Born in Tbilisi, Davit Tvildiani grew up with a passion for mountain and ski sports, becoming a multiple-time champion of Georgia between the ages of six and eighteen.
He later pursued architecture, graduating from the Faculty of Architecture at the Tbilisi Institute of Architecture and Construction. In 1999, immediately after completing his studies, he was invited to Budapest, Hungary, to participate in the international competition Integrated Communities for All, organized by the George Soros Foundation and hosted at the Barcsay Hall of the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts.
Beyond architecture, Tvildiani also explored media and visual culture. Between 2010 and 2011, he served as General Director of the high-circulation lifestyle magazine Modi to Georgia. His love for photography continues to this day, with exhibitions in New Zealand, Ireland, Japan, and other countries.
From Batumi Pearl to the Pearl Festivals
In 2015, Tvildiani founded the international children’s music festival Batumi Pearl. Its success became the springboard for a broader cultural initiative that would eventually cross the Atlantic. Building on the momentum, Tvildiani established the Pearl Festivals in the United States, a network of events designed to give young talents a global stage.
The mission was simple yet ambitious: to unite gifted youth from diverse countries under one platform and provide them with opportunities to showcase their artistry internationally.
The inaugural Pearl of New York took place in 2017 at the Kaufman Music Center. It was a pioneering effort with no direct precedent in the city’s cultural scene. The following years brought new milestones:
- Pearl of New York 2018 at Baruch College’s Engelman Recital Hall;
- Pearl of New York 2019 at Roulette Intermedium;
- Pearl of Philadelphia 2020 at the renowned KleinLife JCC Hall.
Tvildiani also played a pivotal role as organizer of the American audition tours for Slavianski Bazaar and Riga Symphony during 2019–2020.
After the pandemic forced a pause, the Pearl Festivals made a triumphant return in 2023 with Pearl of New York at Roulette Intermedium. Expansion followed swiftly:
- Pearl of Las Vegas 2024 at the Clark County Library Main Theater;
- Pearl of Orlando 2025 at Clermont Performing Arts Center’s Black Box Theater;
- Pearl of Miami 2026 at the Alan and Diane Lieberman Performing Arts Theater (currently in preparation).
International Recognition
Today, the Pearl Festivals are firmly established in the cultural calendars of New York, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, Orlando, and soon Miami. Every year, they bring together singers, dancers, musicians, and visual artists from more than 30 countries.
Far beyond being just competitions, these gatherings are creative hubs that encourage intercultural dialogue, professional growth, and friendships across borders.
The organizing body, Pearl Fest Group Inc., has earned a reputation for professionalism, fairness, and fostering a welcoming atmosphere for participants. Tvildiani himself is frequently invited to serve as a jury member at prestigious festivals worldwide, recognized for his expertise, integrity, and refined musical taste.
A Georgian Vision on the Global Stage
Davit Tvildiani’s work exemplifies how Georgian inspiration and professionalism can transcend national boundaries to create a cultural movement of global significance. Under his leadership, the Pearl Festivals have evolved into more than a stage for performance. They are a living network of creativity, friendship, and human connection.
