Ms. McDonald’s passion for advocacy began during her upbringing in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), where she spent 27 years immersed in a culture of humanitarianism. Witnessing her father’s work as an American surgeon in underserved areas and experiencing two wars by age 13 profoundly influenced her worldview.
The crucial moment in Ms. McDonald’s life occurred when someone violently silenced her childhood friend, just 13 years old, for defending herself. This traumatic event ignited Ms. McDonald’s lifelong mission to champion the silenced and create environments where survivors can rewrite their life stories.
“It is the strength of the women and children we serve that inspires me daily,” Ms. McDonald says. “My role is to help them find their voices and provide the tools they need to thrive.”
Transforming Lives Through Action
WAR Int’l, founded by Ms. McDonald in 2006, embodies her vision to empower survivors of abuse, trafficking and exploitation. The organization operates in over 60 countries, including the United States, creating culturally sensitive, value-driven programs that foster healing, economic independence and dignity.
“We don’t just rescue women; we rebuild their ability to dream,” Ms. McDonald explains. “Our mission is to provide both safety and opportunities for survivors to reclaim their power and purpose in circles of protection.”
WAR Int’l also emphasizes ethical consumerism, offering handcrafted products made by survivors and those at risk. This initiative provides meaningful employment while enabling communities to support the cause through purposeful shopping.
